Dark circles, also known as periorbital dark circles, refer to the discoloration or darkening of the skin beneath the eyes. They can be caused by various factors, including aging, genetics, lack of sleep, hyperpigmentation, and lifestyle factors. Dark circles can be a common cosmetic concern for many people. While they pose no threat to health and are not a cause of major diseases, they can often leave one looking tired and fatigued. Hence, the cosmetics industry has been investing a significant amount of time and resources in the research and development of effective and safe dark circle cosmetics that have no side effects.
The zebrafish (Danio rerio) has become a popular vertebrate model for studying various types of research due to a combination of genetic, physical, and economic factors. Additionally, the transparent nature of zebrafish during their embryonic and larval stages allows detailed in vivo imaging to observe melanocyte alterations. This makes them an exceptional model for investigating melanin development and pigmentation-related disorders.
Our Zebrafish-based Anti-dark Circles Efficacy Evaluation
- Melanin intensity
Dark circles around the eyes are a common problem that many people face, which can be caused by several factors such as melanin deposition due to aging, excessive sun exposure, and lifestyle habits. At Creative Biogene, we have developed a unique approach to evaluate the anti-dark circles efficacy of cosmetics. We divide the zebrafish into a vehicle control group and a treatment group and incubate the latter with cosmetics for a certain period of time. By taking advantage of the zebrafish's transparency, we capture high-resolution images of the zebrafish head and analyze the intensity of melanin signals.

- Blood flow rate
Dark circles under the eyes are often caused by various factors, including blood microcirculation. When blood microcirculation in the skin is compromised or impaired, it can lead to the accumulation of deoxygenated blood and other waste products in the periorbital area (around the eyes). The thin skin in this area makes the accumulation of blood more visible, resulting in the appearance of dark circles.
At Creative Biogene, we divide the zebrafish into two groups - a vehicle control group and a treatment group. Then, we use a highly advanced blood flow analyzer to detect the blood flow rate of the zebrafish. By doing so, we can evaluate the anti-dark circles efficacy of your cosmetics by improving microcirculation.
