The zebrafish (Danio rerio) has become a popular vertebrate model to study for various types of research because of a combination of genetic, physical, and economic factors. With the development of scientific research methods, the zebrafish model provides a valid, whole living organism alternative to costly mammalian in vivo methods.
Zebrafish has emerged as a crucial model organism for medical research. Various studies have demonstrated that the epidermis of both zebrafish and human adult skin is multi-layered and includes a basal membrane (bm) as well as an underlying dermis containing collagen (col) fibers. This similarity suggests that zebrafish is an ideal candidate for skin-related research.

The main advantages you can achieve by using zebrafish embryos for cosmetic efficacy evaluation are as follows:
- Similarity
Zebrafish are widely used in scientific research for their genetic homology with humans (87% of the genome share). Moreover, the skin structure and function of zebrafish are remarkably similar to that of humans, making them an important model organism for evaluating cosmetic efficacy.
- Cost & Time Efficiency
Zebrafish experiments can be completed within a relatively short time frame of 2 to 72 hours, with a sample dosage at the mg level. This not only saves time and cost in preparing cosmetic and raw material samples but also overcomes the limitations of conventional mammalian in vivo experiments, such as longer cycle times and higher costs.
- Direct Visualization
Zebrafish embryos are transparent, and physiological changes in the skin, such as melanogenesis, and oxidative stress, can be directly observed under a microscope, or through phenotype analysis techniques, such as fluorescent imaging.
- High Throughput
Zebrafish is a unique vertebrate model due to their small size and large numbers, which make them ideal for microtiter plate high content, high throughput, and fully automated analysis. This unique characteristic makes them the perfect choice for conducting early and large-scale high-throughput screening of cosmetic ingredient and formulation combinations.
- 3Rs Compliance
Most of our research is conducted with zebrafish embryos before 5 days post fertilization, in compliance with the guidelines established in the 2010 European Commission Directive.
